Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW) unequivocally condemns the manner in which George Floyd died and the legacy of systemic racism and injustice that exists in our society. It is this legacy that led to his death and the deaths of countless others over not years, but decades. Our nation, the United States of America, is founded on the ideal that “ALL” men (and women) are created equal with the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That was in 1776. We are saddened that in 2020, our nation still struggles with ensuring equal access to what we hold valuable.
We are a community health center. The community health center movement was born out of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Created for and by the communities we serve, we champion quality care and health equity for all. We see every day, the negative impact of societal ills on the well-being of our patients. It is our patient population that is on the receiving end of discrimination due to the color of their skin, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, income level or insurance status. Have no doubt, social injustice has a direct impact on the health of our patients and the health of our communities. Even the pandemic has brought to light these inequities as minority communities are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
And so, we must do more.
CHCW stands in unison with the Black community in the fight to eliminate systemic racism and injustice. We denounce all bias that deprives citizens of color their right to be treated with basic respect, dignity and humanity.
CHCW commits to embracing a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. We take a no tolerance stance to racism, discrimination and hatred of any kind. We will continue our work to eliminate disparities that impede equal access to quality health care. As a learning institution, we will strive to listen and learn from one another and to include in our teaching programs, conversations about the devastating impact of systemic racism on our patients and on our community. We will work to create safe spaces for our staff and our communities to engage in open dialogue that examines not only bias and discriminatory practice, but seeks solutions as well. We will advocate for collective change within the communities we serve.
Until Black citizens can feel safe going for a jog, bird watching in the park, sleeping in their own homes, taking out a cell phone or encountering law enforcement, we cannot rest. Until all of our citizens have equal access to health care and education, we cannot rest. Until our justice system exercises its promise to serve and protect equally for citizens of color, we cannot rest.
The future is watching us. Today, we are writing history and we have the power to determine how that history plays out. Our descendants need to know that in the Summer of 2020, BLACK LIVES MATTERED, and this changed the world.

Somos un centro de salud comunitario. El movimiento del centro de salud comunitario nació del movimiento de derechos civiles de la década de 1960. Creado para y por las comunidades a las que servimos, defendemos la atención de calidad y la equidad en salud para todos. Todos los días vemos el impacto negativo de las enfermedades sociales en el bienestar de nuestros pacientes. Es nuestra población de pacientes la que recibe la discriminación debido al color de su piel, origen étnico, religión, género, orientación sexual, edad, nivel de ingresos o estado del seguro. Sin duda, la injusticia social tiene un impacto directo en la salud de nuestros pacientes y la salud de nuestras comunidades. Incluso la pandemia ha sacado a la luz estas desigualdades, ya que las comunidades minoritarias se ven afectadas desproporcionadamente por COVID-19.
Y entonces, debemos hacer más.
CHCW se mantiene al unísono con la comunidad negra en la lucha para eliminar el racismo y la injusticia sistémicos. Denunciamos todos los prejuicios que privan a los ciudadanos del color de su derecho a ser tratados con respeto básico, dignidad y humanidad.
CHCW se compromete a adoptar una cultura de diversidad, equidad e inclusión. Tomamos una postura de no tolerancia al racismo, la discriminación y el odio de cualquier tipo. Continuaremos nuestro trabajo para eliminar las disparidades que impiden la igualdad de acceso a una atención de salud de calidad. Como institución de aprendizaje, nos esforzaremos por escuchar y aprender unos de otros e incluir en nuestros programas de enseñanza, conversaciones sobre el impacto devastador del racismo sistémico en nuestros pacientes y en nuestra comunidad. Trabajaremos para crear espacios seguros para que nuestro personal y nuestras comunidades participen en un diálogo abierto que examine no solo los prejuicios y la práctica discriminatoria, sino que también busque soluciones. Defenderemos el cambio colectivo dentro de las comunidades a las que servimos.
Hasta que los ciudadanos negros se sientan seguros para salir a correr, observar aves en el parque, dormir en sus propias casas, sacar un teléfono celular o encontrarse con la policía, no podemos descansar. Hasta que todos nuestros ciudadanos tengan el mismo acceso a la atención médica y la educación, no podremos descansar. Hasta que nuestro sistema de justicia cumpla du promesa de servir y proteger por igual a los ciudadanos de color, no podemos descansar.
El futuro nos está observando. Hoy, estamos escribiendo historia y tenemos el poder de determinar cómo se desarrolla esa historia. Nuestros descendientes necesitan saber que, en el verano de 2020, LAS VIDAS NEGRAS IMPORTARON, y esto cambió el mundo.
