Diabetes Awareness Month
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and CHCW Yakima is focusing on prevention—because type 2 diabetes is not only manageable, it’s often preventable. With nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. living with prediabetes, raising awareness and promoting lifestyle changes can make a powerful difference.
Understanding the Risk
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough. Risk factors include:
-
Being overweight or obese
-
Having a family history of diabetes
-
Being physically inactive
-
Having high blood pressure or cholesterol
-
Being over age 45
-
Having had gestational diabetes
If you have any of these risk factors, consider taking the CDC’s to assess your chances
Prevention Starts with Lifestyle
The good news? Type 2 diabetes can often be delayed or prevented through simple, sustainable changes:
Lose 5–7% of your body weight if overweight:
Even modest weight loss can significantly reduce your risk
Eat a balanced diet:
rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit sugary drinks and processed foods.
Get active:
aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week. Walking, biking, swimming, or dancing all count.
Drink water instead of sweetened beverages:
to reduce calorie intake and support blood sugar control.
Build Healthy Habits That Stick
Preventing diabetes isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. Here are some tips to stay on track:
- Set realistic goals like walking three times a week or swapping soda for water.
- Track your progress with a journal or app.
- Find a support system—friends, family, or a local wellness group.
- Celebrate small wins to stay motivated.
Diabetes doesn’t have to be your future. With awareness, planning, and support, you can take control of your health and reduce your risk. CHCW Yakima is proud to stand with our community this Diabetes Awareness Month.
