MyChart Two-Step Verification
To strengthen account security, MyChart now requires two-step verification. This process adds an extra safeguard by confirming the identity of the person logging in.
How it works:
- Sign in with your usual username and password
- Receive a one-time code by email or text
- Enter the code on the MyChart login screen to complete access
Why it’s required
- Simple answer: It helps protect against unauthorized access.
- Detailed answer: By requiring a second form of verification, MyChart ensures that only you can log in—even if someone else knows your password. This extra step helps block remote attacks that rely on stolen credentials.
Getting your code:
When signing in, you’ll choose whether to receive your six-digit, single-use code by text message or email. You’ll need this code to finish logging in.
Frequency of use:
Two-step verification is required the first time you log in on a new device or browser. After that, you can opt to skip the extra step for 30 days on that same device.
MyChart teen accounts
Starting April 24, 2022, teens between the ages of 13 and 17 are eligible to create their own MyChart account. Parents or legal guardians may also request proxy access to see portions of their teen’s health information. Because of Washington state privacy regulations, both the teen and their proxy will only be able to view a limited set of records.
With this access, teens and their proxies are able to:
- Send secure messages to the care team, including requests for medication refills
- Book, reschedule, or cancel appointments
- Review upcoming visits, complete online check-in, and fill out questionnaires
- Participate in video visits
- See immunization records
Information not available through teen or proxy accounts includes:
- Lab and test results
- Medication lists
- Visit summaries and provider notes
- Medical, surgical, and social history
For full access to a teen’s health record, the teen and their guardian must complete a release of information form, which can be submitted by phone, email, or standard mail.
MyChart Proxy Access
Proxy access allows a parent, guardian, or designated caregiver to view a patient’s health record. Adult patients can also choose to share their record with another adult. The level of access depends on the patient’s age and situation.
Children (ages 0–12)
- Parents and guardians are granted full access to their child’s health record.
- When the child turns 13, this automatically changes to limited access.
Teens (ages 13–17)
- Privacy laws restrict parents and guardians to limited access during these years.
- Access ends completely once the teen reaches 18.
- In cases of significant cognitive impairment, families may discuss the option of full proxy access with the teen’s primary care provider during a clinic visit.
Adults
- Adult patients can authorize another adult (such as a spouse) to have full proxy access.
- If an adult is unable to manage their own healthcare, proxy access may be given to someone with medical power of attorney. This requires valid legal documentation and must be arranged with the patient’s clinician during a clinic visit.
Your privacy is fully safeguarded.
Your secure and confidential relationship with your provider includes online communication. Advanced encryption, strong passwords, multiple firewalls, and other protective measures ensure your health information remains safe and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals.
